How to improve your loan eligibility

Practical levers — from paying off debt to timing your application — that actually move the number.

Clearing an existing EMI and shopping around for a lender with a more generous FOIR limit are the two most direct levers on your loan eligibility — but they’re not the only ones. A few other choices can move the number just as much, sometimes more, and are worth knowing before you apply.

Add a co-applicant’s income

Worked example

Using the Loan Eligibility Calculator’s own defaults — ₹80,000 monthly income, ₹10,000 existing EMIs, 50% FOIR, 9%, 15-year tenure — eligibility on a single income is ₹29,57,802. Adding a co-applicant (a spouse, for instance) earning ₹40,000 a month brings combined income to ₹1,20,000, and pushes eligibility up to ₹49,29,670— nearly ₹20 lakh more, roughly in proportion to the income added, since a lender assesses combined income and combined obligations for a joint application.

Stretch the tenure

A longer tenure lowers the EMI needed to repay a given loan amount, which means the same available EMI capacity can support a larger loan.

Tip

Keeping the same ₹80,000 income and ₹10,000 existing EMI, extending the tenure from 15 to 20 years raises eligibility from ₹29,57,802 to ₹33,34,349— a real but noticeably smaller jump than adding a co-applicant’s income. Tenure is a useful lever when you’re close to a threshold, but it isn’t free: a longer tenure also means more total interest paid over the life of the loan, so treat it as a way to qualify, not necessarily the tenure you should actually choose.

Timing and your credit score matter too

Two levers don’t show up directly in the eligibility formula but influence it all the same. Timing your application after an existing loan is closer to being paid off — or after closing a credit card you no longer need — frees up FOIR capacity the same way paying it off entirely does, just gradually. And a strong credit score can sometimes move the FOIR limit itself: lenders occasionally offer a more generous ratio, or a lower interest rate, to borrowers with a strong repayment history, both of which raise eligibility independent of your income or existing debt.
